GoldenPalace.com Buys 7-year-old Cancer Patients Artworks

A 7-year-old cancer patient's artworks have been purchased by an online casino site.

Maddox Johnson has put up his paintings on auction at eBay to help finance his medical expenses, and online casino GoldenPalace.com has purchased 11 of them for more than $2,800.

"I got to tell you, I think it's pretty talented for a 7-year-old boy," said GoldenPalace.com spokesman Jeff Kay, whose company paid more than $1,000 for one of Maddox's paintings.

The casino is known for its offbeat marketing strategies, purchasing things such as William Shatner's kidney stone, Britney Spear's pacifier and a grilled cheese sandwich with an image of the Virgin Mary toasted onto it.

"We've just been so overwhelmed with the generosity of strangers that don't have any connection to us at all," said Maddox's mother, Tenille Johnson.

Maddox's family had the idea of selling his paintings as his health insurance does not cover all of his medical bills. The paintings have so far alleviated most of those out-of-pocket costs. Maddox was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma in March 2005, and the family has since incurred more than $10,000 in medical expenses.

When asked what he thought about the attention he was getting, Maddox, typical of a kid who can sum up an enthusiastic response in one word, replied: "cool."

"It's making life interesting, at least. It's keeping us not focused on the negative," his mother said.
